Workshop Synopsis
When Love Hurts: Understanding Control and Boundary Violations in Families and Intimate Relationships
Healthy family and intimate relationships are vital and have a far-reaching impact. They support the mental and physical well-being of individuals and provide a safe haven where members can feel nourished and relaxed. A nurturing, intimate relationship allows one to feel cared for, fulfilled, and supported. Conversely, when these relationships become unhealthy, the harm caused can be severe — even devastating.
Violence within families and intimate relationships often hides beneath the guise of "love." Physical harm is merely the tip of the iceberg. The damage concealed behind phrases like "this is for your own good" manifests in various forms: stifling protection dressed as tenderness, emotional blackmail disguised as familial concern, financial control masked as loving sacrifice. These acts of violence perpetrated in the name of love silently erode the foundation of close relationships.
This workshop will examine the different forms of harm that can arise within family and intimate settings. We will consider:
-
How violence can manifest subtly in relationships
-
The importance of boundaries in healthy connections
-
What boundary violations look like in practice
-
How to engage in non-violent communication during conflict
Participants will also gain an understanding of relevant laws, resources, and help-seeking channels, and learn basic self-care strategies for managing such challenges.
We warmly invite you to join this workshop to:
-
Recognise the signs of boundary violations
-
Practice communication that is rooted in equality and respect
-
Learn how to care for yourself and your loved ones through self-compassion
-
Break free from the chains of "love" used as control, and rebuild a life-giving ecosystem of relationships
